| Andersen,
Maggie |
|
Northern
California educator and artist, Maggie Andersen, explains
that her shoe series is a vehicle to explore composition,
painting techniques, and analogies that speak about trust,
hope, and faith. In other words ... “A gateway of learning
to see, exploring and thinking are a few of the reasons I
apply paint to paper. I have to get these images out of my
overactive imagination, and water media is a fun and expressive
way to play, exploring techniques and discipline myself. ” |

| Balfrey,
Willo |
|
Willo Balfrey grew
up in Durango, Colorado, a town surrounded by the Rocky Mountains,
meadows, red rim rocks, trees, streams, and the beautiful
colors of fall. These impressions are with her today as an
inspiration for her landscape paintings. Now living in Weed,
California, beauty still surrounds her. Working on location
as often as possible, she brings the viewer into her work
by painting the dramatic sense of early morning light, or
the intense fall colors |

Toward the end of a career teaching
and counseling in higher education, I found fine art. Or it
found me. Regardless, painting took center stage and many
other facets of my life became background. I have benefited
tremendously from wonderful teachers and have been fortunate
enough to have been accepted into and won awards in regional,
state and national watercolor shows. |

watercolor comes out of the Northwest from artist Lane Hall.
His work is characterized by a strong, bold use of the medium
with crisp images that have exceptional depth of color. This

I have gained experience
with a variety of art media during my time spent teaching
art in public schools. Of all the media that I have tried,
pastel is the most immediate, the most expressive and the
most forgiving. The pastels become an extension of my hand
as I try to interpret what I see and how I feel about a subject
matter. |

Color holds a fascination
for me that I am sure I will spend a lifetime discovering.
The dance of light, of strong contrast and reflective shadow,
the pushing of color a step beyond reality - these are the
elements that I am working with. My work proudly hangs in
private collections throughout the United States, Canada,
Western Europe and Australia. |

Whatever the medium
my aim is to draw the interest of the viewer with imagery
which then invites, through metaphor, considerations of the
individual, the family, society and the natural world. My
art reflects my life. It is an opportunity to explore issues
as elusive as personal challenges, death, or politics, or
to simply try to capture a piece of beauty that touches me. |

There are so many
different mediums, surfaces, subjects, and inspiring artists
around me that it is hard not to get overwhelmed with it all.
My desire is to try every avenue atleast twice. I hope to
meet as many artists as I can and continue to see so much
desire in them. I love art and can’t imagine life without
these gifted people .... without something beautiful to look
at. My soul is moved ... |

The ultra-realistic
pencil work by Kim Ragsdale showcases her attention to detail.
Growing up in Montana and now living in rural southern Oregon,
she credits her experiences in the western lifestyle as inspiration
for her pieces. Kim captures her subjects in their element,
either at what they do for a living or how they enjoy their
free time. She has specialized in commission portraits for
three decades. She says. "I draw what I see, not what
I know is there." |

rules of perspective, form, balance, and colour. I believe
my responsibility as an artist is to approach my profession
with integrity: Apply the rules, aim for the standards, continue
learning, and do what I can to further perfect the craft. |

For me art isn't about
drawing, painting, water color, paper or canvas. It's about
seeing with new eyes and building on that which is seen. To
be in the moment when light and shadow compliment form, when
time is lost and paper or canvas has it's own life, those
are truly the magic instances of 'seeing' with new eyes. |
